Twisted Mary Socks
Designed by Cherie Cool

Cherie created this pattern as a birthday gift for our friend Mary Griffitts

Materials

  • Sock yarn, enough for a pair of socks (sample sock was made using Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock yarn)
  • 4 double point needles size 2 (or size needle to meet gauge)
  • A yarn marker
Instructions

Gauge: 9 stitches per inch

Special Techniques and Abbreviations:
LT = using the next 2 sts on the left needle, knit into the back of the second st. Pull loop through leaving second st on left needle, then knit the first and second sts together through back loops and let the sts drop off the needle.

S1 = slip one st purlwise

N1, N2, N3 = needle 1, needle 2, needle 3
Cuff:
Loosely cast on 70 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles. Be careful not to twist, join in the round and begin cuff pattern.

Row 1: place marker, (k5, p2) 10 times

Row 2: slip marker, (LT, k3, p2) 10 times

Row 3: slip marker, (k5, p2) 10 times

Row 4: slip marker, (k1, LT, k2, p2) 10 times

Row 5: slip marker, (k5, p2) 10 times

Row 6: slip marker, (k2, LT, k1, p2) 10 times

Row 7: slip marker, (k5, p2) 10 times

Row 8: slip marker, (k3, LT, p2) 10 times

Repeat these 8 rows 2 more times

Last row of cuff: slip marker, (k5, p2) 10 times

Leg:
The leg is knit in St st with 5 LTs made on every other round. There will be no more purls until the heel flap.

It becomes important here to pay close attention to how the LTs look and where to knit the LTs on top of each other on the continuing rounds to continue a spiral around the leg.

This leg portion of the pattern will not be written row by row. LT sts will remain on N1 while sts are moved manually to N1 from N2, and moved from N1 to N3 as needed.

Remove marker. Begin to set up sts for leg pattern.

Put the first 33 sts onto N1, there should be 5 LTs on this needle. Divide the rest of the sts onto N2 and N3. LTs will only be made on N1 for the leg.

Rnd 1: Knit to the st before the LT made in the round below. Notice the line of LTs. The next LT will be made in the st of this line and the st following this line. make a LT, (k5,LT) 4 times. Knit the rest of the round.

Rnd 2: Knit

Continue these 2 rows until sock measures 7 inches from beginning of cuff, or to a desired length.

Remember, as your leg gets longer you will have to move sts around on your needles to continue the LT spiral down the leg on N1.

Set Up for Heel Flap: (read first)

First complete Round 1 of leg, LTs have just been made on N1, knit N2 and N3, stop knitting.

To set up for the heel flap divide sts. 36 sts will be used for heel flap and 34 sts for instep.
