Twirly Curls Hat
"Blessed are the cracked for they shall let in the light..."

Materials
  • 1 100-gram ball of a worsted-weight yarn
  • 1 #7 or #8 16” circular needle
  • 1 G crochet hook
  • Gauge: 4 ˝ sts per inch
Instructions
Note: These instructions are written for a child’s size cap (Changes to knit an adult size are designated by parentheses).

Cast on 60 (90) sts and join into a circle. Place marker. Work in K1, P1 ribbing around for a depth of about 1 inch. Work next row in knit stitch around.

Make 12 (18) Twirly Curls as follows: At the beginning of next row: K4,

* Pull up a loop of next stitch and with crochet hook chain 8, (here’s where you may want to use a point protector to keep the other stitches on your needle). Work back by skipping first chain and working 5 single crochets in each chain. Remove crochet hook and K4. * Repeat around from * to *.

Now knit around until the hat measures about 4 inches from beginning.

Start top-of-hat decreases as follows:
  • K6, K2tog * repeat around
  • K 1 round plain
  • K5, K2tog * repeat around
  • K 1 round plain
  • K4, K2tog * repeat around
  • K1 round plain
  • K3, K2tog * repeat around

Continue until 3 (6) stitches remain. Create a Twirly Curl in each stitch (you’ll be able to do each one separately) at the top. Secure your yarn ends and weave in the tail. Place lovingly on the nearest child!

Consider some variations such as working Twirly Curls over the entire hat every 4th stitch of every 4th row, using different colored yarn for the curls, or working beads into the stitches.
